Are you ‘stuck’ trying to figure out how to secure your dentures? There are plenty of options to choose from, but which one is best? If you’re looking for a new adhesive, here’s a breakdown of your options to help you out of a sticky situation!
How Do I Secure My Dentures?
Securing your dentures is essential to keeping them in place in your mouth so you can comfortably eat and speak. When it comes to adhering your dentures, there are several options: creams, strips, and powders, each with their own pros and cons.
Denture Creams
Denture creams usually come in a tube. To use, squeeze a small amount of cream directly onto your wet dentures where they sit on your arches and gum tissue; however, the amount and location could vary depending on what type of denture you have and the adhesive manufacturer’s instructions. Denture creams are said to be the most secure form of denture adhesive.
Denture Powder
Denture powder is applied by sprinkling it onto the dentures where you position them on your jawbone, and securing the dentures in place where you want them. Because the powder covers more of the surface of the denture, it is easier to adjust than other forms of adhesive.
Denture Adhesive Strips
Denture adhesive strips are a little different than other forms. They are ideal if you have poorly fitting dentures. However, it is not recommended that you go too long with a bad fit, because this can cause pain and other medical problems to your jaw.
Adhesive strips are applied to dry dentures and then secured to the jaw. It is also important to note that they are generally a bit more expensive than the other options.
Decisions, Decisions…
Now that you know the difference between adhesive types, you’re ready to pick your own. But remember, no matter which option you choose, you still need to clean your dentures and remove all adhesive each night. This will help keep your dentures free of debris and bacteria and ensure that you have a comfortable fit going forward.
Your dentures should fit comfortably and only require a small amount of adhesive to stay attached. If you find that this is not the case, speak to your dentist about your options. You may want to try a new brand or type of adhesive, or you may need to replace ill-fitting dentures entirely.
